The subject of the comics will be 'Tiger and Bear', a performance art project by James Topple and Colin Riddle based on the Korean myth of the tiger and the bear and the founding of Korea.

A lot can be said about it, but basically its two Englishmen in giant comedy animals heads, seeking a dialogue with Koreans about how their culture is changing and what place traditions have in the Korea of today as it under goes rapid modernization. You can find out more about Tiger and Bear in the links below.

http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/NEWKHSITE/data/html_dir/2009/09/04/200909040046.asp
http://www.theoneonefour.com/2009/09/12/face-to-face-with-the-face-of-zoophilia-the-one-one-four-talks-with-tiger-and-bear/

One aspect of the project is that Tiger and Bear are interested in giving up control of their image by allowing others to interpret them and their project, which is where the comic comes in:

Collaborators are given a choice of two briefs. Writers need to sketch out or script a 4 panel storyboard with some dialogue, about anything they want. It can be funny, serious, political, sad, historical, whatever, as long as it involves the two foreigners dressed as tiger and bear.
These stories are then passed onto illustrators/artists to transform into four panel comic strips. How the illustrators choose to portray the story and the two characters is completely free, as we would really love receiving a range of different styles and most importantly a range of different takes on the two characters.

What happens with the finished products is they are published in various media outlets around Korea. We have had a fantastic response to the project so far with strips appearing weekly in The Korea Herald (the countries longest lasting English language national newspaper), a monthly spot in a community magazine called Daegu Pockets and a national magazine called Eloquence that is published in both Korea and the U.S.A, and weekly appearances on several popular Korean blogs such as theoneonefour.com and Expacked. We are looking for more media outlets in both Korea and overseas, particularly in the U.K.
Eventually we plan on publishing compendium of the comics and putting on art shows in various art galleries.

There will be no financial compensation at this point, primarily because we're not making any money from this, but credit will of course be given. It will also present an exceptional networking opportunity.

As it stands this could be a really fun and creative collaborative project between foreigners and Koreans. If this sounds like something you want to get involved with email us at tigerandbearkorea@hotmail.com with the subject headline 'COMIC' and join our facebook group!
Most comics sites tend to focus on the artists (and rightly so, artists are wonderful people and comics would not happen without them). Many artists also write their own scripts, but I'm wondering if there's anyone else about here, like me, who writes and doesn't do any of the drawing?

This morning I was all enthused to lob some more 24 Hour Comics Day results at you. But due to a minor incident with a spammer, today we're going to have a brief update on etiquette for our little home on the internet.

ComicsLifestyle is a shared community. It's a virtual space rented by yours truly from a service provider. Every town has its cool record shop/comic store/gallery, and this is ours on the internet. If I or my friends act inappropriately, either I've got to 'mind the store' or we risk being booted by our provider.

Our mission statement* is pretty simple - we feature comics and creators that rock our world, primarily those that follow their own path. We generally favor cool stuff that deserves more attention, and occasionally we celebrate when those of our number get awards and recognition. (When Lark Pien gets an award, or Mandy Ord gets a book published, it's a good day.) Take a look at our archives to scope our sensibility.

Our doors are wide open, and we strive to be global - comics are for everyone.

Sometimes though, I need to kick gatecrashers out of the party. What can get you the boot?

1. No gangsters / wannabe gangsters - that's off topic. Off topic items can be subject to deletion at any time: it's my party and I'll delete when I want to. For $4.95/monthly you can start your own party.

2. Not listing what comics you like. It's about comics, OK?

If you can't be bothered, obviously you don't care about being a member of this community.

3. If you are a big fan of superhero comics, this is not the place for you. There are heaps of places on the internet to discuss them, we are carving out a small corner for something different.
We acknowledge the place of this material in comics history, but are focusing on other stuff. If you haven't taken the time to figure that out, I'm pressing 'delete'.

4. If you are under the age of 18, you will politely be asked to leave.

We cover some mature topics, and prefer to play it safe.

5. Spamming other members.

It's good to see how Lifestylers responded with good humor in identifying the offending party. (As your moderator lives in Cambodia, it took me a few hours to catch this.)

Abusive comments to other members will get a slap on the wrist. Threats or hate speech will get you instantly vaporized. Fortunately that hasn't happened (because we're a cool crew), but on the interweb, it's good to be careful.

--------------------------------

So far our 'big tent' approach hasn't required tougher rules, but as we get more members, we may need them. I should also note that in the past we have had guest moderators / editors, and that may be worth a try in this coming year. (Don't raise your hand all at once.)

* 'Mission Statement' sounds so corporate... maybe I should call it a manifesto? Psst - Hey you...tag:comicslifestyle.ning.com,2009-01-11:864783:Topic:107672009-01-11T04:32:42.000ZJohn Weekshttp://comicslifestyle.ning.com/profile/jinjablogger
Hey, you.

No, don't look over at me. Just keep doing what you were doing.

Pretend I'm not here.

Just nod if you can hear me.

Uh-huh.

International Literature Conspiracy Week is coming. Yes, you heard
me. And no, don't try googling it: it has no web presence. It
exists. It just is. And now, you are part of it.

What to do? Don't despair. What to do is this:

Become part of it. Become part of it via 'Target 144'.

Because you make comics, you will make comics as part of 'Target 144'.

Yes…
Hey, you.

No, don't look over at me. Just keep doing what you were doing.

Pretend I'm not here.

Just nod if you can hear me.

What to do? Don't despair. What to do is this:

Become part of it. Become part of it via 'Target 144'.

Because you make comics, you will make comics as part of 'Target 144'.

Yes you will.

There are 144 hours between 12 midday on Monday 9 February and 12
midday on Saturday 14 February. In those 144 hours, those six days,
those 6 x 24 hours, you will make a comic.

Yes you will. And that comic will concern itself precisely with that
time, those 144 hours, what's happenin, what's runnin through your
noggin, what's up and what's down in the big glad world. IN those six
days. And to prove that your comic IS made in those days, is done on
them, you need to include a paste-up from a newspaper or some other
date-bearing piece of officialdom, from those days.

Now, not that Sticky has ANYthing to do with Project 144, at all, but
you should come to the first 6 of the 144 hours which will be held
there, in that little underground grotto underneath Degraves Street,
on the way to Flinders Street Station, under Flinders Street itself.
I will shower you in coffee and chocolate as long as my modest stipend
allows. So that's on Monday 9 February from 12 midday until 6pm: come
along and get your... story, your book on its way.

And then, once the 144 have ended, from 12 midday until 4pm or so on
Saturday 14 February (smootchy smootchy, Saint Valentino...) there'll
be something of an utterly unadvertised, non-publicised, uber-secret
gathering of the 'Target 144' comickers (that's you) and the 'Target
144' zinesters (that's others), with copies of your book which you've
printed up and can sell/swap. (If you can't get in on the Saturday,
you can drop copies of your book off earlier in the week in a box at
Sticky (which, again, is unequivocally not affiliated with said
Festival).

So that's one way your work will get 'out there' as the hip and 'with
it' folks say. The other way is, I (don't look around, or you might
recognise me, and then the whole thing will be ruined), I'm gonna
print me up an A5 booklet of all the 'Target 144' comics I can get me
greasy mitts on. It's gonna be low-fi fotocopied. So after you've
swapped and sold to your heart's form and content on that Saturday,
you gets your files to me and I spends me some time at Kinkos. And
THOSE books go to...actually, I can't tell you. You understand.

Now this is a golden chance to belt something out over less than a
week, and dream up your own rules: 6 pages, 10 pages, 144 panels, left
hand drawing, no pencils, all in biro, brush straight to the page, do
what you will, as old Al Crowley says. Whatever it is that stops you
making comics, dash it to one side. It's like making a 24 hour comic,
but with more sleeping.

But not much more.

Target 144.

International Literature Conspiracy Week.

Don't talk.

Just draw.

Shhh.
